A forensic comparison microscope is a microscope consisting of two independent optical paths to two independent specimens to be compared. The views are merged into a single split image, usually with a divider line that can also be moved to show more or less of one of the forensic specimens. A forensic comparison microscope can come in various types.

The first type is the low power version, often called a bullet comparison microscope, ballastics microscope, or sometimes called a fingerprint comparison microscope. They are used by police departments, crime scene investigators, crime laboratories, private detectives, and defense attorneys for examining evidence such as bullets, bullet casings, firing pins, fingerprints, hair specimens, lock picking markings, fabric, rope, threads, and wires. The second type of forensic comparison microscope is the high power version. It consists of two biological compound light microscopes that are built together and with a comparison bridge to merge the two images to be compared. Typical biological evidence may consist of blood, bodily fluids, microbes, and other evidence that would be viewed on a microscope slide under high power magnification. A typical compound light biological microscope uses illumination from below. This is what is needed to illuminate the specimen on a glass slide.

Other special forensic applications may require high power magnification of opaque specimens that would not be suitable for optical viewing on a glass slide and illuminated from below. Forensic analysis of these specimens would require use of a metallurgical forensic comparison microscope. The light would come through the microscope objective as in a typical metallurgical - metallographic microscope. Opaque forensic specimens needing greater magnification than a low power forensic comparison microscope can give would need this type of metallographic comparison microscope.
